Millions of people have made the switch to e-cigarettes, all over the world. And while it is certainly not as offensive as smoking tobacco cigarettes, users still should exercise caution in the workplace, as well as in the company of their employer or co-workers who may or may not use vape products personally.
Vaping spread so quickly that it happened before standards for use were established, leading to mass confusion over what is acceptable and what isn't.
Now, etiquette experts, employers, and even the government in some instances are beginning to weigh in.
After combing through sources, we came up with these guidelines that anyone can refer to regarding vaping at work.
The Common Courtesy List of Do's and Don'ts
1. Do Vape on Your Own Time
Excluding work breaks, you should not use time on the clock to vape if you work with others or in an office setting.
Instead, vape during breaks set aside for meals or otherwise and be sure that you follow the protocol set by your management.
2. Do Be Considerate of Others
If your co-workers are gathered outside to chat, you should ask if anyone minds prior to puffing. It's possible that the vapour could irritate allergies of others or may otherwise be offensive to someone for a reason that might not occur to you.
If you are not familiar with a group or if top-level superiors are present that you may want to impress, it is a good idea to find a more secluded spot to privately vape.
3. If Someone Asks, Do Answer Honestly
Although you may not want to broadcast your habit to all of your colleagues, you shouldn't lie about it if you happen to be questioned by a co-worker. And while stealthing is becoming a mainstream fad, it's better in professional circumstances that you don't sneak away to areas where vaping might be viewed as unprofessional (for example, the workroom or restrooms).
Use discretion, and if questioned about your habit, answer honestly and comfortably. You never know when someone may be asking out of curiosity spurred by their own motives, such as considering a personal switch from cigarettes.
Even if they are just being 'nosy' they will be more likely to respect your preference if you are forthright and mature in your response. As long as you are abiding by work-related rules and your habit isn't infringing on others, it won't likely cause a negative response.
4. Do Not Vape in Public Locales When Keeping Company With Colleagues
If you are invited out to an office-wide lunch, dinner, reception, or have a meeting in a public location, such as another office, library, or institution, wait until you can slip outside to vape.
It may be viewed as unprofessional, inappropriate, and in many cases, it can be against the law to vape in restaurants or other indoor meet-up spots.
If you have to attend for an extended period, slip outside for a vape break when you use the restroom or telephone. Most likely, no one will notice that you have even left the group if you don't linger.
5. Do Obey the Law
No matter how your co-workers or employer feels about vaping, you should first make sure that you are obeying the law. Never sacrifice good judgment that could result in the loss of employment, or worse, a legal infraction.
Be mindful of the expectations for those whom you serve in your career. For example, if you work at a hospital that does not allow vaping within a certain distance for patients, you should also follow this rule.
6. Do Not Vape When Riding Public or Shared Transportation
In your career, you may find that you sometimes or often must share transportation to and from business-related activities with others in your office or industry.
If you are sharing a taxi, bus, or carpooling, either in yours or someone else's personal vehicle, it's not a good time to break out your e-cigarette. When stuck on the road, your co-riders will have little say in whether or not they are exposed to the vapour.
If the weather is chilly, they may have to ride along with the windows up. And even for others who enjoy vaping, this can get stuffy after a minute or two.
Better yet, wait until you have arrived to inconspicuously disappear outside for a puff or two.
7. Do Not Blow Smoke
This rule should apply to any group that you may be around when vaping. Hopefully, it goes without saying, that you should never blow in the direction of others, especially towards their faces.
If you are chatting with others who are also vaping at work, then stand a few feet away so that you can talk comfortably without exhaling too closely.
How Does the Government Feel About Vaping?
In addition to practicing common courtesy, several government vicinities have established their own set of legalities towards the vaping trend.
While many of the suggested government guidelines allow for discretion, they typically provide a framework from which to base decisions.
In the UK, where the number of vape users rose to 2.8 million in 2016, the Department of Public Health England released a publication outlining a framework for professional policymakers to use when creating their own standards for vaping at work.
Their advice included the three following acknowledgments by professor Kevin Fenton, National Director of Health and Wellbeing at PHE:
"The evidence is clear that vaping is much less harmful than smoking and that e-cigarettes are helping many smokers to quit."
"This new framework will encourage organizations to consider both the benefits and the risks when developing their own policies on e-cigarettes."
"Different approaches will be appropriate in different places, but policies should take account of the evidence and clearly distinguish vaping from smoking."
Considerations for Professionals
The released publication from Public Health England, in agreement with Cancer Research UK, held that e-cigarettes are playing a key role in reducing the harm caused by tobacco.
They urged professionals to abide by five considerations when instituting their vaping at work policies. These consisted of the following:
Make clear the distinction between vaping and smoking
Ensure policies are informed by the evidence on health risks to bystanders
Identify and manage risks of uptake by children and young people
Support smokers to stop smoking and stay smoke-free
Support compliance with smoke-free law and policies
The UK's approach varies from some of their neighbours, however.
Vape Users on the Rise While Vaping at Work Dips in the U.S.
In the United States, many states have banned e-cigarette usage in public areas and professional buildings, giving individuals less leeway to make their own rules.
In 2014, 28 of the United States and the District of Columbia had enacted a ban on smoking at work. But only three states, which included New Jersey, Utah and North Dakota, had added e-cigarettes to those bans.
On the other hand, 150 municipalities had banned vaping at work and public spaces, listing restaurants, bars, and offices as no-zones.
In 2014, Forbes also reported that many of the most popular U.S. chain stores and employers, including Walmart, Target, and Home Depot, who collectively employ millions of workers nationwide, had put in place a "no vaping at work" policy. It is unclear if these retailers allowed vape breaks or vaping on the grounds, however.
Be sure that you are mindful of the precise rules according to your area prior to puffing to avoid any potential conflict.
It should be noted that although some places are stricter than others, almost all agree that vaping is a preferred habit compared to smoking tobacco.
Even with national and state law addressing the issue, vaping at work does not appear to carry the health, professional, social, or legal ramifications associated with lighting up tobacco cigarettes, comparatively.

1. Change Your Wattage and Temperature
Just like any reaction between heat and flavour, temperature affects how things taste. The elements of your juice may taste richer at one temperature and sweeter at another.
The setting that determines the heat of your coil will determine the kind of flavour you get. Flavour chasers prefer variable wattage/voltage devices over simpler devices.
Every liquid has a different optimal temperature. While some taste great at 20W, others will taste better at 30W. At the end of the day, it's your device and coil temperature that makes the biggest difference.
Start off low and then bring it up little by little to find the right temperature.
2. Avoid Vaper's Tongue
Your biggest hurdle to getting the most from your flavour could be your own tongue. Your tongue can become fatigued after spending too long tasting the same flavour.
Make sure you're trying different flavours and drinking plenty of water to keep your taste buds in shape. If you've worn out your tongue, there's no way you're going to get the most out of your vape juice flavours.
If your tongue is feeling fatigued try sucking on a lemon or taking a whiff of fresh coffee beans to reset your palate. Mix it up and just be sure that you're giving yourself enough time between hits for the best flavour.
3. Proper E-Juice Storage
Your e-Juice itself could be limiting your ability to get the most out of your vape flavours. Poor storage of e-liquids can lead to degradation of flavour.
Be sure you're keeping it in a cool and dry place. Like a fine wine, higher quality juices taste better with age (within limits). Flavour notes can expand over time.
Minimise the amount of open air and heat that your e-liquids have contact with. Try different ways of storing your e-liquid to improve the flavour.
4. Limit Airflow
Airflow is the greatest ally of cloud chasers who love to release big plumes. When there's lots of airflow moving between your coil, vapour can create giant clouds. This takes away a lot of your flavour though.
Flavor chasers need to put a stop to the airflow. Dense and warm vaping carries a lot more flavour. If you have an adjustable airflow system, you'll find you're able to change your flavour greatly.
Vapour can become too hot to enjoy if you close off your airflow, so experiment with different settings.
The size of your bore can change things. The width of your vapour chamber will affect flavour as well. For the best vapour flavours, try narrower airflow but make sure the temperature is still palatable.
5. Get A Good Atomiser
Your atomiser plays a significant role in the amount of flavour you get from your e-cigarette.
Top-coil types of e-cigarettes that have the atomiser at the top. This means that flavour is reliant on the wick and you may not end up getting a strong flavour.
Bottom-coil atomisers are much better for flavour. Less pressure is on the wick to get the flavour all the way up to the top.
You should also make sure you've got a good performing tank. Some tanks help boost flavour production.
The most important is your atomiser head. Larger coils mean more airflow. Choose a tank with a small bore coil.
If you're a serious flavour chaser, rebuildable atomisers offer the best experience. For vapers comfortable building their own coils, this is the way to go. There are levels of customisation that with vaping that you won't be able to get with anything right off the shelf.
For technical vapers, different coils can maximise flavour. Serious flavour chasers might want to try this approach.
6. Below-coil Airflow
The airflow holes are so important for the best vapour flavours. Airholes on the sides of your coil are an okay layout but it's better they're placed at the bottom.
Airflow underneath your coils opens up a direct path for the flavour to move up the mouthpiece. If you're shopping for a dripping atomiser, pay attention to where your airflow holes are.
Under-coil airflow is the way to get the most out of your vapor flavors. Try a few different coils to figure out what works for you. This could be the factor that makes the biggest difference in getting the most flavour out of your e-juices.
7. Get a Narrow-bore Drip Tip
Believe it or not, your drip tip has a big influence on your flavour. Modern atomisers and tanks use larger bore drip-tips. But this will only lead to airier vapes, cool vapours, and cloud production.
If you're shopping for a new tank or atomiser, find one that will take a narrower tip. This is the best way to get the most flavour from your new atomiser.
Thinner drips tend to produce the best flavour.
8. Keep Everything Clean
Just as you would wash your milk glass before you poured a beer into it, smokers who care about flavour should keep their system clean. Every time you change your vape juice, you might want to rinse your wick, coils, and tanks.
Juices always taste the best when they're vaped from a clean system.
Disassemble your clearomiser, rinse everything in warm water and make sure that it all has time to dry.
If you have a backup head, use that while the other is drying.
Systems with rebuildable atomisers allow for easy wick changes. After you remove the old wick, fire the coil to dry it all out. Once it cools, insert your new wick and get your vape on.
9. Choose quality materials
Your wicking material will make a huge difference in the kind of flavour that you end up with. Wicks made of silica tend to mute the flavour, even though they're common in e-cigarettes. Cotton has become the number one wick of choice for vapers.
Japanese cotton comes in an organic option and is now widely recommended. It comes in square sheets and you can find it as a standard for many atomiser coils. You'll find you get a clean flavour from your e-liquid and it wicks better than most other materials.
"Cotton bacon" aka cellucotton is a newly popular option. Some smokers are also using ceramic wicks. They resist heat and last a long time.

So long as you avoid materials like nickel, you'll have better flavours. However, some metals will give you a metallic taste and ruin your vaping experience.
10. Use High PG Juices
The PG/VG ratio of your juices has a big effect on flavour. Most vapers will develop some preference one way or another over time. Cloud chasers will look for high VG because of the big clouds they'll end up with.
High VG juices aren't ideal for flavour chasers however.
High VG juice is semi-tasteless but with a hint of sweetness. It has trouble carrying the flavour the way that PG does. This is why you'll find better flavours mixed with PG.
Choosing a juice that's high in PG yields the move flavour but can make the throat hit a little bit harsher. Be careful when smoking higher PG flavours.
Your ideal should be a ratio of half and half. You'll end up with the best flavour while also getting a mild throat hit. For better flavor, try 50-60% PG.
Again, experiment with what tastes good and vapes the smoothest for you. Every vaper is different. The only thing that matters is what tastes best to you.

Prep for Easy Vape Tricks
Adjust your vape juice and device to deliver the best results.
To do these easy vape tricks you have to inhale and blow out large amounts of vapour, so choosing the right juice is important. It's recommended to go with a high VG juice. You'll have a less intense throat hit and ensure a large cloud size.
Inhaling a lot of nicotine can make you dizzy, so you might even want to use a juice with no nicotine. You can also opt for plain VG juice which has no nicotine and no flavour.

This trick entails exhaling a cloud of vapour and then rapidly sucking it back in.
Here's how you do it.
Take a long pull of vapour but keep it in your mouth – do not inhale.
Let the vapour sit in your mouth for a few seconds, then slowly push it out. As soon as the vapour leaves your mouth, rapidly suck it back in.
You will use The Ghost Hit in more complicated tricks, so it's a great skill to learn at the beginning of your practice.

2. French Inhale
This is a subtle, easy vape trick that's also known as the Irish Waterfall.
Here's how it looks.
Vapour released from the mouth is inhaled through the nostrils. It can look like an upside down waterfall.
Your first step is similar to The Ghost Hit - take a pull but don't inhale. Keep your mouth closed and let the vapor sit. Then slowly open your mouth, slightly extending your bottom jaw and release the vapor.
Finally, inhale the vapour through your nostrils and you've completed the trick.
Do this sleek inhale around friends or at parties and see if anyone notices – it's a sly one to pull off unannounced.
3. The Tornado
Why go tornado hunting when you can create a similar and uh, far safer experience with your vape.
This is one of the easy vape tricks requiring you to use your hands. You manipulate a large vapour cloud with one hand to make it swirl like a tornado.
You can't do this trick in the car because you need a flat, sturdy surface.
The first thing you want to do is stand or sit in front of a table. Take a solid drag, then bend over, putting your mouth as close to the table's surface as possible.
Slowly exhale the vapour while your mouth is nearly parallel to the flat surface. You want your cloud to be dense and contained.
Once all the vapour is released, extend your hand and put it in the centre of the cloud. Quickly raise your arm upwards as if you are reverse chopping the vapour.
Stand back and watch the twister shape take form.
You can also control the flowof your exhale by blowing the vapour through an empty toilet paper roll.
With practice, you'll give Mother Nature a run for her money.
4. The Dragon
Of the easy vape tricks, you may think this one looks super complicated, but it's not!
With a few practice rounds, you'll be looking like a vapor-breathing beast in no time.
To do The Dragon you essentially blow vapour out of four areas: both of your nostrils and the corners of your mouth.
To get the vapour to come through the sides of your mouth, you have to keep the centre of your lips touching while you exhale. That may require some practice.
As with the first two tricks, take a long pull and don't inhale. The longer the pull, the better.
Once you've got all the vapour in your mouth, push it through your nose and the corners of your mouth at the same time.
Bear in mind that you have to push the vapour out as quickly as possible and with some force.
Add a mean glare to this trick and you will honestly look scary as hell.
5. The Big Os
Blowing Os, or creating rings of vapour with your exhale, is an important technique to master if you want to move on from easy vape tricks to more advanced ones.
With enough practice, you'll be able to blow strings of Os one after another and even alter their shape and size.
Follow these steps for blowing Os.
Inhale, but keep it in your throat. You don't have to take a large inhale, so smart small for your first few rounds.
Rest your tongue at the base of your mouth. Slightly push the back of your tongue to the back of your throat.
Curve your lips tightly around your teeth forming an "O" shape. Don't push your lips out like a kiss, keep them taut.
Push the vapour out by pulsing the back of your throat like you're lightly coughing.
You can control the shape of the ring by how large or small you round your mouth when exhaling.

Once you feel confident blowing Os, try altering their shape>by using your hands.
Exhale a ring of vapour, then gently push it with one of your hands. Quickly tap one side of the ring and you'll see it bend into a triangle.
The timing of your handwork is important to get the best result. Try playing around with when and how to push and tap it.
Once you get the timing right, you'll produce awesome triangles that you can add to other easy vape tricks.
7. The Jellyfish
This trick is a sure crowd favoruite. When done right, it looks exactly like a jellyfish moving underwater.
Your first step is to blow a large, single O and gently push it with one hand.
Take another drag, and slowly drop that exhale into the center of the ring. This move is similar to the technique of ghost inhaling.
The rest of the work is done for you as you stand back and let your last exhale move through the O like a jellyfish.
8. The Bull Ring
The Bull Ring is a fierce-looking trick but if you can blow O's, you'll find it easy to do.
Step one is to blow a medium-sized ring.
Lean into it and inhale the top part of the ring through your nostrils. It will look like an awesome septum piercing or a bull ring, however you choose to look at it.

9. The Bane Inhale
If you're a Batman fan, you will love this move. The exhale in this trick resembles the Bane mask.
Take a drag and hold it in your mouth.
You will then push your bottom jaw out to make your bottom teeth touch your upper lip.
Allow the vapour to come through your teeth and through your mouth – this is what creates the image of the Bane mask.
Direct the vapour upwards by inhaling it through your nose, much like the French Inhale.
There are a number of ways to position your teeth for the exhale, like putting your bottom teeth behind your top teeth and slightly smiling. Play around with the ways that work best for you.
10. The Lasso
Giddyup cowboy, this trick will make you feel like Butch Cassidy in no time.
By strategically blowing two rings, you'll create the illusion of a lasso.
Blow a large, thick ring.
Expand the ring by pushing it quickly with your hand.
Take another drag of your vape and blow a smaller ring in the center of your first ring.
The momentum of the small ring moves it through the large one. It wraps around it, looking like a lasso.
The Lasso is a little more complicated than the previously listed easy vape tricks. Practicing the basics will build a strong foundation for you to pull off this move.
